Hello

Lisa Stanton, PhD, is a recovery author, speaker, content creator, and advocate. Her recovery is not just from addiction, but from a wide range of mental and physical health conditions that have shaped her understanding of what it means to be well. With both scientific expertise and lived experience, Lisa offers a unique perspective on wellness and recovery, one that has drawn a substantial following on social media and led to podcast features and speaking engagements at recovery events across the country. What sets Lisa apart is not only her story of overcoming challenges, but also her willingness to openly share how faith has been and continues to be central to her healing journey. She isn’t afraid to write about her mishaps, whether from her pre-recovery years or from just last week.

Lisa lives with her husband on ten acres just west of Minneapolis, where motorcycles outnumber people. Together they own ten motorcycles, including sidecar motorcycles (one of which was their wedding “getaway car”), and four mopeds they’re always trying to convince other couples to ride with them out to dinner. Lisa and her husband recently launched The Unlearning Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to faith-based education, support, and community for people in recovery from addiction and mental health concerns. She also serves as co-leader of the Minneapolis chapter of The Invitation, a monthly in-person gathering for Christian women.

When she’s not writing, creating content, or speaking, you’ll likely find Lisa exploring new ice cream shops, laughing with her husband, sharing meals with friends, or walking alongside women she sponsors in recovery.

Lisa's Background

Her scientific roots run deep, but her awakening over the last few years has been even stronger. Dr. Lisa A. Stanton holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Richmond and a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Her expertise is in behavior change theory and its applications to health and chronic disease prevention. During graduate school, she served as student advisory council chair for the Society for Health Psychology, a division of the American Psychological Association, and was a finalist for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. After completing her doctorate, she spent two years in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, where she completed a National Cancer Institute T32 postdoctoral research fellowship in Behavioral Cancer Prevention and Control. Across her training years, she taught or assisted in 18 undergraduate and master’s-level courses and co-authored more than 30 academic publications, encyclopedia entries, and book chapters. She has presented at psychology and health conferences across the United States and Europe. Today, she works as a Clinical Research Scientist for a health technology company, where she helps design and evaluate digital health programs.

Despite her extensive scientific background, Lisa’s writing and speaking now draw primarily from her personal experiences of recovery. Her journey is not only from addiction, but also through eating disorders, anxiety conditions, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, alopecia areata, and more. She writes about her transformation from believing that more knowledge would save her to discovering that true healing came through a relationship with God. Her essays and videos appear on her Instagram account @drlisastanton and in her online publication The Unlearning Gazette, reaching thousands of people each week with stories of hope, honesty, and faith.
