Lisa's Work

Lisa Stanton, PhD is an author and speaker who brings together a rigorous scientific background with a personal journey of faith. She earned her PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Minnesota, where her research focused on behavior change theory and its applications in chronic disease prevention and control. Following her doctorate, she completed a National Cancer Institute T32 postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Cancer Prevention and Control at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Since then, she has worked as a researcher in the health tech space, working at two start-ups focused on behavioral coaching for Type II diabetes prevention and management.

While her professional research has centered on advancing scientific knowledge and health outcomes, Lisa’s more recent work reflects a shift in focus: from trusting knowledge alone to discovering the deeper transformation found in faith. Through her online publication The Unlearning Gazette and her Instagram account @drlisastanton, she shares essays and videos with thousands of readers and followers. Her writing draws from both her scientific expertise and her personal experiences in recovery not only from addiction, but also from eating disorders, anxiety, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, alopecia areata, and more.

Lisa’s voice now bridges two worlds: the precision of science and the vulnerability of lived experience. She writes about finding joy by unlearning the beliefs and behaviors that kept her stuck, showing that while knowledge can inform, faith can transform.

"These essays are tales of a spiritual un-blocking; a colonic irrigation for the soul-something that may feel unpleasant at first before the true benefits unfold. In a world where we experience a constant feed of spiritual trends, the stigma of the word “god” and a default setting to be in control, these stories offer a calm oasis of spiritual simplicity. Lisa gives a masterclass in taking personal responsibility for our own suffering, illustrated by her own experiences that resonate with me profoundly. This book is an irresistible invitation to open your mind, swallow the hard pill of rigorous honesty, and practice the liberating art of sweet surrender."

“…highly engaging and personable, touching on questions I have always had but have never spoken out loud before. A thought provoking must read for the believer, but even more-so for the skeptic of God.”

Brooklyn

“Reading this book felt like having a deep conversation with my best friend over a cup of fancy coffee - except this time, she's dishing out life-altering wisdom. Who knew enlightenment could be so entertaining? If you’re ready to laugh, cry, and maybe even question your life choices, this spiritual journey is the one for you!”
